Definitely feels like I've over-complicated fitness when I see this page. Move your body. Doesn't require rampant consumerism.

Watches

I had an older Garmin Edge at some point, I think.

Bikes

Bikes I have known and loved that were never "mine" include the VT pedicab and the double tall.

VT Pedicab

Pedicab, with the bench I built:

Empty, after I had taken off the pole it came with:

Rumor has it that some engineering students built this thing with a go-cart axle. I had to do some welding to repair it!

The most fun I had on this bike is when VT beat Duke in basketball and we took a joy ride around Blacksburg. Energy was insane.

I did make some cash pulling people up to football games.

Double

Double tall bike, with TIG aluminum welding (above my skill level):

The double was very fun to ride!

Workout

First time really having a workout room at House 13. Sure I've had bike trainers for a long time, and even had a random free treadmill at House 12, but never a real workout room.

Picked up some dumbbells and a bench for $20 at a yard sale in Shelburne.

  • Dumbbells
  • Bench 1

Dumbbells were a STEAL (in the 2024 workout room):

Workout room itself started with just a treadmill in the basement by the breaker (and a random bike thing fron the side of the road). Looks like I didn't even have a TV or anything…spartan. Early Jan 2018:

This lasted almost a year. Put up some studs and dryway on my way to a real workout room. Brought some equipment from home, in addition the white rig pictured in the build.

  • White rig
  • Back ext
  • Sit up bench

You can see what it looked like at that point in here:

The white rig ended up going to Kyle. During COVID we joined the Peloton train. I did a lot of riding but we really got it for Sam (I would have opted for a wheel off trainer!).

  • Peloton

Added the Rogue rack, bar, flooring, and plates after having my back lock up right after Number 3 was born in July 2021:

  • Rogue Ohio Bar
  • Rogue Folding Rack
  • Bumper plates
  • Recovery wall

Start with the recovery wall:

Here's the rack, with an upgrade to extended arms, using two of the old arms to make it a tad taller.

This also includes the hex bar, the bumper storage, and the PRx wall storage:

Christmas one year Molly and Tony got me a nice box.

  • Box

Not sure when I picked up these bits:

  • Micro plates are very handy for doing progressions
  • Adjustable dumbbells

I got the power block extensions all the way to 90lb because it's hard to find the matched extenders for older versions of the power blocks. Better to get them all together.

I don't love the feel of having hands in side the "box", but hey they're heavy.

For ATG added a Tib bar:

and a slant board:

Used some of my MassMutual health and wellnes dollars to buy a hex bar. Marc said it should be better for my back?

  • Hex bar (you can see this pictured above).

Side of the road in Hadley in summer 2024:

  • Bench 2

All together in 2024 this looks like:

Then we have the electronics / recovery gear.

  • Normatec boots.
  • Theragun (thanks Dad for leaving it for me!).
  • Running bungee shorts (haven't really used these yet).
  • Cycleops fluid trainer. Amazing that with better direct drive trainers around, this cycleops fluid trainer is basically worthless. It was like $300 new in 2012.
  • Nashbar rollers. My first indoor trainer! These are pretty darn load, so I can't ride them with Sam around.
  • CORE temp sensor. Bought this as a dual purpose kid fever monitor and training tool, but the kids hated having it stuck on (bummer). I've used it on-and-off to monitor how hot I'm getting in the summer. See a photo of it showing on the watch at Garmin Forerunner 955.
  • Calibre (need to write up my experience with it!).
  • HR straps: Polar H10, some Tickr ones, and even older lots.
  • Runn. This thing works great.
  • Fans: Lasko air moving fans. Game changer for indoor riding.

Interesting ideas

Aero sensor

Real time wind tunnel data on the bike.

Magicshine Monteer 8000S V2.0 Mountain Bike Light with Remote Control

As of 2024, not distributing in the US anymore. Action LEDs does sell Gloworm lights, supposed to be very nice.

Kommander – Titan Lab

Bike training button controller thing - not sure what you'd need it for.

Dream treadmills

Either a woodway (powered) or a Trueform runner.

Maybe: AssaultRunner but that's the budget one.
