Specialized Tarmac Sl3

Backlinks: Fitness Tech

Great deal. Solid bike. My first carbon road bike! The Kazane had cracked, and I swapped everything a lot right over.

Original purchase of the frame

[GMBC] Frameset for sale | 56cm | Specialized Tarmac SL3

Chris Worden [email protected] via list.uvm.edu Attachments Sat, Apr 23, 2016, 1:10 PM to GMBC-L

Hi all,

I'm selling my 56cm specialized Tarmac sl3 frameset.

Bike is in great shape but used for a few seasons. I've worked in shops for over 10 years and take good care of my equipment; there are some cosmetic blemishes but I'd ride this for years to come if I hadn't been given a new bike as a gift.

Would make a really awesome first carbon road bike or trainer for anyone who already has a race setup.

Asking $550 or best offer. Photos attached but I can provide more upon request

Thanks! Enjoy the spring roads Chris

Groupset from ebay

Looks like I bought a groupset back on May 6, 2016 for it:

10 Speed Mini Group, SRAM Rival, STIs-Brakes-Derailleurs Item Id: 222105483056 Transaction Id: 1731027181012 Estimated delivery: Fri. May. 6 Quantity: 1 Paid: $258.17 with Paypal

This sounds like quite a deal…

2020

Sat, Dec 12, 2020 Ultegra CS-6700 Cassette 10 Speed Quantity: 1 $59.99

I assume that I put it on this bike, though it could have gone on the TT bike.

Upgrading to wireless shifting

The wireless shifting was so good on the Firefly, that I need to upgrade this.

A modern etap from SRAM (force) would cost 1250, red would be over $2k. Way more than I want to spend. On ebay, used red costs $1338. Not a lot of options for rim brakes. Both of those are 12 speed options, there aren't really much else. Some 11 speed options.

Going to try using the Wheeltop upgrade kit. $599 shipped for the rim brake version, and it looks pretty easy to set up! Maybe I'll upgrade to 12 speed, if I want, and all I'd need would be the cassette and freehub body. Might as well go with 11sp, to upgrade without the body.

Ordered:

  • WHEELTOP EDS TX Wireless Carbon Electronic Shifter/Derailleur (Road Bike) × 1

Note that it fits up to 36t rear.

<2025-04-11 Fri>

Purchased a new rear tire (current one is very shot), cassette and chain. The chain measured a 1.0+ on the tool, so I think both need to go.

Got one extra chain that I can swap in/out so I can keep this one waxed too.

  • 2x KMC X10 10-Speed Chain, $25.00 each
  • Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite Road Tire, 700C x 28mm, $64.99
  • Shimano HG500 10-Speed Bicycle Cassette 11-34, $51.99

Shipped to laughing dog. I'll put this all on when the new shifters come in. I think the chain rings will be okay.

Quick update <2025-05-02 Fri 17:05> - as of this morning, looks like we're really going to have some trouble with the front derailer. Others have had this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY4aJYSvBAI And fixed it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DugkeBWfvvg&pp=0gcJCYQJAYcqIYzv. I can't remove my riveted hanger (I don't think), and also the mech hits the middle of the hanger as it goes back, so it angles the back of the cage way out. So that's two issues on mine…hmmm. Maybe I can file down both the derailer itself (looks like some plastic above a battery??) and also file down the hanger…

<2025-05-04 Sun 21:08>

Finished the installation yesterday. With a metal file, I got the derailer to fit yesterday. Once it was all connected, pretty easy to set up! First ride today and it was all good.

TODO Lengthen brake cables

They are too short with the Wheeltop shifters somehow. Also install caps on the cables…

TODO True front wheel

It's pretty wobbly.

Chris King R45 Wheels

Chris king r45 hubs as the basis for a pretty slick set of wheels. I'd love to get something a little deeper just for zipping around.

I had these wheels on the Kazane.

Note <2025-04-11 Fri>: the freehub is looking pretty rough, maybe in need of replacement at some point.

R45 servicing

I love that these came with a manual for servicing. I got the tools to service them, and have done the whole process at least once. The internals are a thing of beauty.
