I have a pretty simple home lab:

Components:

  • Switch TP-Link TL-SG108 8 Port Gigabit Unmanaged Ethernet Network Switch, Ethernet Splitter Plug & Play Fanless Metal Design Shielded Ports Traffic Optimization $19.11 w tax November 24, 2023 amazon
  • Eero mesh network (eero 6+ 3-pack) $207.18 w tax, Nov 20, 2023
  • UPS CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System, 1500VA/1000W, 12 Outlets, AVR, Mini Tower,Black February 29, 2024 $233.70 w tax amazon
  • Synology
  • Macbook Pro 2013
  • cabinet Nov 24, 2023 $63.74 w tax

ShutesburyNET symmetrical gigabit for $60/month is hard to beat.

The synology was a significant upgrade! I had run airflow, various websites and services off of the old macbook running linux (it's still my Tailscale exit node).

Software

This left really just aggregates from the Synology and MBP. See more stuff on the Synology page.

  • Home Assistant on a VM
    • This (along with a HA compatible bulb) was an elaborate solution to having a light above our kitchen table that (the outlet in the ceiling there is not switched!).
  • Tailscale everywhere
  • Airflow one-time I had this on the MBP, to alert me if I was going to miss my run streak.
  • Plex this felt like ad-ware from the start, gross, uninstalled it.

Software ideas

Stuff I don't actually run, but bookmarking for the future.

Display

For $169, you can get one put together with a frame. No battery. https://www.invisible-computers.com/

With a JOAN device, seems expensive since you have to buy the Pi too ($400+ total). https://github.com/schwartzie/weather-joan

4.7in with esp32 embedded for $35, aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256801819744140.html

Waveshare is where the original got the display: https://www.waveshare.com/product/displays/e-paper.htm
