Claude Won the 5k

A few weeks ago I wrote about using Claude to design my 5k training plan. The short version: I hadn't trained specifically for a 5k in years, had about a month before the MassMutual Halloween Hustle, and decided to let the model design the block.

Spoiler: it worked.

The Race

MassMutual Halloween Hustle 5k 🥇 — October 28, 2025

Final time: 19:30 (6:17/mile pace). First place overall.

The race was a solid effort — not an all-out PR attempt, but a controlled hard effort that put me at the front from the start. I felt good through the middle miles and had enough left to push the finish.

Did the Plan Work?

Looking back at the training block, Claude's plan was structured and sensible: intervals early, tempo work in the middle, short sharpening sessions close to race day. I didn't execute every session perfectly (the lifting fell off toward the end), but the running volume was there and the quality work held up.

The 19:30 was a comfortable win. Would I have been faster with a different plan? Hard to say. But going from zero 5k-specific training to a race win in four weeks — I'll take it.

What's Next

Back to cycling for the fall/winter. Maybe we run this experiment again next year and see if we can go sub-19.
